Language is a strong determinant of life chances. Education outcomes, social integration, employability, health and well-being are all influenced by the ability to use and understand language. Language is also an important aspect of social diversity. CAER research helps understand children’s language development, and the many factors that influence that development. We design and evaluate language interventions; we assess language skills (oracy and reading); we seek to understand and document the language experiences of children growing up in different environments, whether they are monolingual or multilingual.
