We are developing a new, online and automated reading task to identify struggling readers at KS3 and the source of their difficulties. We have integrated this into a battery of language tests which, together, will provide us with a fuller picture of pupils language skills. This will help us investigate the impact of deprivation and EAL on language outcomes, and is a first step towards creating a benchmark to inform schools’ language assessment at KS3.
- Send parents/guardians consent forms – we use an opt-out method of consent.
- Arrange for pupils to complete a short, online questionnaire.
- Provide a quiet space for 1-to-1 testing
- Complete the online questionnaire. All pupils can do this at the same time.
- Attend two 1-to-1 sessions with a researcher (each lasting~30 minutes) where they will complete a series of language tasks.
Schools will be given details of the research findings, including:
- Children’s overall scores, both across the school and across Bradford.
- Individual reports regarding each child’s performance on the tasks.
We are looking to recruit schools between now and May 2022.
If your school is interested in taking part, please contact Lydia ([email protected]) for more information.
