Act Early (Holme Wood)

Holme Wood, a locality in Bradford with high levels of deprivation, has been the target of various interventions and services over the years to address social issues, but many have failed to have meaningful, sustainable impact.

The Alan Turing Institute funded ActEarly: Holme Wood, a programme that addresses the issues on Holme Wood in a novel way. ActEarly: Holme Wood brings data scientists, community members, practitioners, and service providers together to explore how lives can be improved through data science. The programme consists of:

  • Analysis and modelling of routine and newly generated/linked data relevant to priority issues within the community to identify where there are patterns, relationships, and predictive indicators for issues
  • Gathering input from the community to gain a richer understanding of identified issues and the local context
  • Creation of interactive, publicly accessible findings and data visualisations, which policymakers, community members, and service providers can utilise to test different predictions and develop new ideas to resolve identified issues, thereby informing decision-making on policies and interventions

The ActEarly: Holme Wood programme process, along with lessons learned from its initial application on Holme Wood, can be applied to other areas of Bradford and the UK, to drive effective and impactful policymaking through data science.
