Publication Summary
Introduction As in many countries, UK educational policy is being focused towards the notion of the “Learning Society” or “Learning Age” (DfEE, 1998). Following in the tradition of the “Lifelong Learning” movement, the Learning Society concept has an underlying emphasis on continued participation, both formally and informally, in education and training throughout every learner’s lifespan (ESRC, 1995). At present, with less than a quarter of the adult population participating in learning activities, the vision of transforming Britain into a nation of learners may appear ambitious, but is one that the government see as achievable; primarily with the aid of educational technology.
