Background Themanagementofdepressioninprimarycareisasignificantdepressioninprimarycareisa significantissueforhealthservicesworldwide.‘Collaborativecare’interventionsareeffective,butlittleisknownaboutwhichaspectsofthesecomplexinterventionsareessential.Aims Tousemeta-regressiontoidentify‘activeingredients’incollaborativecaremodelsfordepressioninprimarycare.Method Studieswereidentifiedusingsystematicsearchesofelectronicdatabases.Thecontentofcollaborativecareinterventionswascoded,togetherwithoutcomedataonantidepressantusewithoutcome dataon antidepressantuseanddepressivesymptoms.Meta-regressionwasusedtoexaminerelationshipsbetweeninterventioncontentandoutcomes.Results Therewasnosignificantpredictoroftheeffectofcollaborativecareonantidepressantuse.Keypredictorsofdepressivesymptomoutcomesincludedsystematicidentificationofpatients,professionalbackgroundofstaffandspecialistsupervision.Conclusions Meta-regressionmaybeusefulinexamining‘activeingredients’incomplexinterventionsinmentalhealth.Declarationof interest None.
